What your donations are doing in Haiti

Road Building

Road building is a core part of what we do. When communities have a road linking them to the rest of the country they are able to sell their produce at better prices. Other services and products can reach them much easier. The resulting increase in quality of life is inspiring!
For example, in 2008, Hope for Haiti helped built a small hospital at a cost of a little over $100,000. There had never been any kind of medical help in this area before. The earthquake hit the hospital in 2010 doing lots of damage. When the  Red Cross found out about it they said they came and build a new hospital. Since we had built roads into this area they could haul in the material to build with. The new hospital was constructed in 2013 at a cost of about $1,200,000. This hospital is run by another hospital about 20 miles west. Since we installed the last bridge in January 2018 they now can go back and forth to the hospitals without driving through the river.
As an additional benefit, Water for Life has drilled several hundred water wells along the road now that they had a road to drive on.

Tree Nursery Project

The land has been denuded of trees which were converted to charcoal. The nursery supplies about 100,000 trees a year which can be purchased for 2 cents apiece. The nursery is almost self-supporting.

Terraces

Raymond hired 20 Haitian to build terraces which they had observed in Tibet. They would hire them in 2-week intervals. A person would need to volunteer on the Friday and Saturday of the previous week to qualify to get his name in the hat for the next 2 weeks to work for a dollar a day. At times they would have 300 people volunteering for the job. They used a pick, shovel, and hand level to build the terraces.
